Hi, I'm Bill. I'm a software engineer at Safari AI, a vision AI startup for venues like theme parks and stadiums. I build AI agent pipelines, internal tools, and the occasional notification system that has to speak Teams, SMS, and WhatsApp at once.
I'm finishing a CS Honours degree at UBC. My thesis taught a vision-language model to caption satellite imagery, and taught me what hand-labelling 23,715 bounding boxes feels like. In fall 2027 I'm heading to Waterloo for the Master of Data Science and AI, largely for the distributed systems.
I like data at both ends: the systems that move and store it, and the moment it turns into a story someone can act on. My one rule for side projects is that each has to fix a real problem of mine. Right now that's a Proxmox homelab platform that builds and deploys my own apps, starting with an open-source transit app on TransLink's real-time data.
This site is a little weirder than a resume on purpose. If you want the resume version, cd resume. If you want the human version, keep scrolling.

## values i try (and often fail) to live by
- ship small, ship often. prod is the only real teacher.
- the boring tool wins. use postgres until you can't.
- write it down. future-me is a stranger.
- be kind in code review. be kind in general.
